About Us

Introduction

The Network of Spiritual Progressives Northern New Mexico (NSP-NNM) is a new organization born of the interest and efforts of almost a hundred people. On the national level, the Network of Spiritual Progressives is an initiative of Tikkun and is springing from the Spiritual Activism Conference held in Berkeley this past summer of 2005.

The national NSP leadership is giving broad authority to local chapters to organize and conduct themselves in ways that are appropriate to their locality. Therefore, NSP-NNM could have a tremendous impact on the future direction of public policy in Northern New Mexico and, as an extension, the course of political dialogue nationally.

Summary

NSP-NNM champions-- based on the shared core of our faith traditions and spiritual paths-- the progressive values described in our mission statement and the policies that will implement these principles in the public life of our state and nation. As an educational non-profit, we are issues and values driven and do not seek to support a particular political party or any particular political candidates. We do, however, advocate ideas and policies that support our values.

In addition, we intend as an organization to publicize how our various spiritual and religious practices have led us to very different conclusions about public policy than are championed by religious conservatives. By doing this we will help unite the millions of us who are spiritual progressives and take our country in a radically different, and more progressive, direction.

NSP-NNM will accomplish its goals through building a core membership and hiring staff that can mobilize to publicize issues, hold conferences, cooperate with other social change movements, host lectures, produce educational materials and influence public discourse through the media.

As a matter of principle, NSP-NNM is dedicated to presenting a vibrant, determined face to the public that embodies our belief in human dignity, mutual respect and creates a movement that is a magnet for hope and positive change.
